Peter Mutharika gets 18 bills

Peter Mutharika has about 21 days to approve 18 out of the 26 bills that were passed during the last Parliament meeting.

Twenty-five out of the 26 were government bills while one was the private members bill.

However, recently there was controversy among different stakeholders regarding the land-related bills, especially the Customary Land Bill which some chiefs fear will take away their authority over land.

In an interview with The Daily Times, Parliament Spokesperson, Leonard Mengezi, without coming out clearly on the specific day said the bills were sent to President Mutharika last week.

“What the standing orders say is that once the President receives the bills, he must assent to the bills within 21 days. But what I can assure you is that all the bills that were passed were sent to him for assenting. So we are going to wait for the assenting so that we know the status quo of the bills,” he said.

State House Press Secretary, Mgeme Kalilani, confirmed the development, saying the bills were sent to the President last week.

“The bills were sent to the President and he has officially gotten them today (Wednesday). I do not know how many they are but what I can confidently say is that the bills have reached the President,” Kalilani said.

Among the bills that were passed during last Parliament session include; the Copyright Bill, Physical Planning Bill, and Electronic Transaction Bill.
