Sunbird drills life guards

Over ten life guards and pool attendants from the Sunbird group hotels on Saturday graduated from a week-long life saving and diving refresher course offered by the Malawi Defence Force in Mangochi.

Sunbird Group Human Resources Manager, Edward Chunga, said the firm is committed to ensuring maximum safety of people using its swimming pools as well as beaches.

Chunga said this is why the firm has over the past eight years been organising refresher courses for its life guards and pool attendants.

He was, however, quick to point out that despite boasting of highly trained life guards, visitors need to exercise caution when using the pools and beaches.

“What we are saying is that, the responsibility of taking care of one’s life, rest in the hands of the individuals involved.

“We can do our part, but to an extent. So we urge our visitors to exercise caution when using the swimming pools and beaches,” said Chunga.

Among other things, Chunga advised the swimmers to use life jackets to ensure their safety and security.

Commanding Officer for the MDF Marine Unit Major Peterson Mhone underscored the importance of hospitality units to have highly trained life guards and pool attendants.

Mhone said highly skilled life guards would help reduce cases of drowning in pools and beaches.
