About Two years after hiring General Ignacio Maulana as Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, President Peter Mutharika has moved him to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) for a yet-to-be-known position.
Supuni Phiri, who has been deputising Maulana in the two years, is now the General with Clement Namangale as his deputy.
Mutharika hired Maulana in June 2014 to replace General Henry Odillo who is now answering Cashgate-related charges.
While some quarters see politics at play in the re-deployment of Maulana, government spokesperson, Patricia Kaliati, described the move as normal.
“The appointing authority is the President, who is a politician and when you say some people suspect there is politics at play, what do you mean?
“If we did not like him, the President would not appoint him as Army Commander in the first place. He is now heading to the food reserve agency which means he has even been given a very big role of ensuring that food is on the table of everyone. So, it is a normal thing,” Kaliati said.
She, however, would not disclose Maulana’s position at the grain reserves: “You ask him. It is him who has been appointed and it is him who knows his position.”
NFRA Chief Executive Officer, Nasinuku Saukira, said he is yet to get communication on the arrival of Maulana.
“I am hearing that news from you,” is all Saukira said on Sunday.
