Police recover two stolen vehicles in Mozambique

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers at Zomba Police Station on Friday recovered two vehicles that some people stole from a car hiring firm called Umodzi, arresting two suspects in the process.

The vehicles have been recovered in the neighbouring Mozambique’s Tete area.

The arrested suspects are Alfred Mwale and Emmanuel Shabu.

Zomba Police Station spokesperson, Patricia Sipiliano, said on May 21 this year the suspects went to Charles Sambani, who owns Umodzi car hiring firm, and told him that they wanted to use his vehicles for four days.

“But to Sambani’s surprise, the suspects never returned the vehicles and when he tried to call them, their phone numbers were out of reach. When CID did the investigations, it was revealed that the vehicles were sold in Mozambique and officers from the department went to that country and recovered the vehicles,” Sipiliano said.

She said the two are in police custody and they are expected to answer theft charges in accordance with Section 278 of the Penal Code.

“We would like to advise owners of car hiring firms to have proper security measures in safeguarding their vehicles to avoid incidents of this nature,” she said.

Mwale, 27, hails from Toleza in Balaka while Shabu comes from Emanyaleni Village in Traditional Authority Mtwalo’s area in Mzimba
