RTD revenue up 93% on Maltis

The Department of Road Traffic and Safety Services has said the new Malawi Traffic Information System (Maltis) has helped boost revenue collection despite numerous challenges motorists face.

This was said during a visit by Minister of Transport Mallison Ndau at the directorate offices in Blantyre on Thursday.

Maltis is a computerised system, which was introduced last year amid protests from different sectors.

Acting Regional Road Traffic Officer (south), Christopher Kuyera, said since the introduction of the system revenue collection has picked up tremendously.

Kuyera said for the one year the system has been in operation, the department has managed to raise K1.6 billion against a target of K855 million.

“This is a very effective system. Since its operation, we noted that there is sanity within the system due to less human manipulation and interference. Because of this, we have also seen our revenue skyrocketing,” he said.

Kuyera said the system does not allow officers transacting on behalf of each other.

Kuyera, however, bemoaned the challenges faced within the Certificate of Fitness (CoF) section.

“The system takes 20 minutes to process one CoF and this is creating a backlog within the system,” he said.

Ndau said government has already identified a number of companies that will be issuing CoFs, to ease congestion at the department.

He said the companies are expected to start their operations on today.

“In the Southern Region, we have identified two companies, thus Toyota Malawi and Dalitso Suppliers. We have already inspected their premises and equipment and we expect that by August 1, [today] they will start their operations,” he said.
