A woman, who is yet to be identified, gave birth and dumped the baby in Limbe River in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.
According to Village Headman Macheso, the baby was discovered Tuesday morning by women who went to wash at the river.
“Women came to my house around 8 o’clock in the morning today (Tuesday) and told me that a newborn baby had been dumped in the river. I rushed here and found the baby. There are razor blades and some spots of blood which give the suspicion that the woman delivered here and threw it [the baby] in the river,” said Macheso.
Limbe Police publicist, Pedzisai Zembeneko, said examinations by doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital confirmed that the baby was dead.
“We are doing our investigations to apprehend the woman and we urge members of the public in Chiwembe to be on the lookout. They should report the woman to Limbe Police that the law should take its course,” Zembeneko said.
Macheso disclosed that the baby is the second to be dumped in the river in his village in the last four months.
“We are getting worried with the trend. This is the second time a baby was dumped in this river. Another incident happened four months ago. We need to sensitise the people on the sanctity of human life that they should treat it with dignity,” said Macheso.
