Lilongwe-based businessperson, Lefnos Chigamula, has sponsored a day-long pool reporting workshop— for Central and Northern region sports journalists to the tune of K550,000.

Sports Writers Association (Swam)—a grouping of sports journalists, presenters and photojournalists— will host the workshop tomorrow at Crown Hotel in Lilongwe.

In a statement released yesterday, Swam vice-chairperson, Leonnard Sharra, said the objective of the workshop was to improve pool reporting standards among sports journalists.

“Swam is very grateful to Mr Chigamula for accepting to sponsor the workshop, which will go a long way in improving the knowledge of the growing sport of pool among sports journalists, resulting in quality reporting,” Sharra said.

“The workshop will be facilitated by two experts from the Central Region Pool League (CRPL) with vast knowledge of the game and its rules.”

Chigamula, who also sponsors the K750,000 Central Region Pool League, said he accepted the request from Swam to sponsor the workshop, having observed that pool was growing in the country “but only a few sports journalists have knowledge of the game’s rules and terminologies.”

He hoped that the involvement of sports journalists in pool activities will lead to the growth of the sport and enable pool authorities to identify a strong national team capable of winning medals on the international level.

The workshop comes fast on the heels of another sports journalists’ workshop sponsored by Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) in Blantyre last month.

The workshop, which only targeted Southern Region-based Swam members dwelt on the Olympic movement, doping in sports and other.
