Ethel Chisambi shines in netball tourney

Prison Sisters goal attacker, Ethel Chisambi, has lit up Malawi Under-21 National Netball Team’s camp with her exploits at the Netball Youth World Cup qualifiers in Botswana.

Chisambi has shone for Malawi, which has registered two wins at the Botswana event.

Chisambi’s inclusion in the squad was questionable as she spent most of her time sitting for Malawi Schools Certificate of Education examinations.

But the promising youngster was instrumental when the Junior Queens overcame Namibia 48- 30 during the event also dubbed as the Africa Youth Netball Championship.

This was a second win for Malawi, which also thrashed Lesotho 81-11 in the opening game on Sunday.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary, Carol Bapu, who is in Botswana, said Chisambi earned recognition with her movement during both games.

“She put up a good show to spearhead our team’s win. Her movements were superb and she opened up Namibians defence with ease. She created space, which allowed our team to break the Namibians’ resilient defence,” she said.

Malawi will return to action today when they face Zimbabwe.

Bapu said the fixture was reworked and Queens’ technical panel acted swiftly to come up with a game-plan.

“Every team is affected by the change of the fixture and so the best thing is to accept and move on,” she said.

In other opening games, South Africa beat Zambia 49-39.
