Michiru Orphanage showers the needy

Michiru Orphanage, an arm of Michiru Zambezi Evangelical Church in Blantyre, on Saturday donated assorted items to the elderly, needy students and a wheelchair to a 10-year-old child with disability.

Chairperson of the orphanage, Reverend Molten Kalima, said the aim of the charity work was to lend a helping hand to the needy of Zambezi Evangelical Church as well as other people surrounding the church.

“Of course the primary duty of our church is to preach the gospel but it is also equally important to help the needy. We took the good example set by our saviour, Jesus Christ, who not only preached the gospel but also healed the sick and fed the hungry,” he said.

Kalima said the orphanage intends to reach out to more people by the end of this year.

“God-willing we want to reach out to as many people as we can and also raise funds in order to pay school fees for needy students because we believe that education is the key to building a better Malawi,” he said.

Evereti’s mother, Fanny Mchimeje said her daughter has had difficulties in walking since she was young.

“I was failing to take my daughter to church, physiotherapy and other places because she can’t walk and depends on our family members to move her from one place to another. Sometimes I would get tired carrying her at my back and therefore, she would miss her physiotherapy but now I will be able to take her with me anywhere with ease because of the wheelchair,” she said.

Michiru Orphanage was established in January this year and since its inception it has managed to reach out to the elderly, paid tuition fees for the needy students and helped those taking care of orphans with money grants. The current donation has benefited over 25 people.
