Central Region women’s football giants, DD Sunshine and Skippers United, will renew their rivalry on Friday when meeting in a Presidential Women’s Cup semifinal at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.
The draw for the competition took place on Tuesday at Civo Club House in Lilongwe.
Another potentially-explosive semifinal involves Blantyre Zero and Super Power from Mzuzu at the same venue.
Sunshine, Super Power, Blantyre Zero booked semifinal tickets after emerging as champions in the Central, Northern and Southern regions, respectively.
Skippers qualified as best losers.
Initially, Sunshine and Skippers also met in the Central Region Presidential Women’s Cup final, which the former won through post-match penalties.
Sunshine have been dominating matches against Skippers.
A fortnight ago, Skippers also lost 2-1 to Sunshine in the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Women’s Football League.
Speaking after the draw, Skippers Director, Charles Mwenda, was hopeful of ending the jinx against Sunshine.
Sunshine coach Andrew Chikhosi was also optimistic that his team would reach the final.
“We expect Skippers to come hard on us after they lost the last two games to us. However, we hope to continue from where we left and reach the final,” he said.
The women’s final will curtain raise the men’s final involving Nyasa
Big Bullets and Moyale Barracks at Civo Stadium.
The champions in the women’s Presidential Cup will walk away with K1.5 million, medals plus a trophy, with the runners-up and third-placed team pocketing K500,000 and K300,000, respectively.
