An accredited Federation of International Basketbal l (Fiba) Ireland-based basketball trainer, Marrie Horgan, is drilling 25 Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) referees with the aim of raising the standard of the sport.
The week-long training ended yesterday in Lilongwe.
The participants were drawn from all Cezobal affiliated teams.
In an interview over the weekend, Horgan hailed the local referees for being punctual, dedicated and disciplined, saying that he expects officiating standards to improve after the training.
“I have been drilling them on the basics of the game and on how they can improve basketball. I am really pleased because the participants have been enthusiastic to learn new things about basketball. I hope that at the end of the training, Malawi will have quality basketball referees,” Horgan said.
Cezobal referees chairperson, Waleke Mponda, described the course as an eye-opener.
“We never had qualified referees in Cezobal so the course is timely,” Mponda said.
Ten female referees and 15 males took part in the basketball refereeing clinic.
