There is a typhoid outbreak in Malosa, Zomba with 348 cases reported but no death so far.
Ministry of Health has confirmed the outbreak and added that the cases were reported from Malosa Secondary School, St Luke College of Nursing and St Luke Hospital.
“On 2nd July 2016, the Ministry of Health (MOH) through Zomba District Health Office was notified of an increase in the number of patients presenting to St. Luke Hospital with fever, headache, vomiting, abdominal pain and general body weakness. Malaria tests were negative. Further investigation by the MOH has isolated Salmonella typhi, a bacterium that causes Typhoid, from blood samples that were collected. Specifically, the outbreak has affected Malosa Secondary School, St Luke College of Nursing and St Luke Hospital.
“The Ministry of Health, through the Community Health Sciences Unit in Lilongwe and Zomba District Health Office will continue working together with the affected institutions and the communities in Malosa to control the disease
“Signs and symptoms of Typhoid according to the statement include gradual onset of high fever over several days, headache, weakness, abdominal pain and constipation,” reads a statement from the ministry signed by Principal Secretary MacPhail Magwira.
