Thugs on Sunday invaded former president Bingu wa Mutharika’s Ndata Farm where they destroyed several items in Mpumulo wa Bata.
The thugs broke into the imposing Mpumulo wa Bata Mausoleum— where Mutharika and his wife Ethel Mutharika were buried — and destroyed six portraits of the late Mutharika, two serving bowls, two big drawers, window glasses, curtains, picture frames and other valuables.
However, P o lice National spokesperson, Nicholas Gondwa, was elusive on the matter. He asked for more time on Wednesday to gather information only to tell us on Thursday that the information on the matter was not handy as police officers from whom he was supposed to source it were on holiday.
But The Daily Times has established that the police have arrested Ernest Mayaya Walesi, aged 18 years from Mitabali Village in Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo District.
“The suspect is currently being kept at Limbe Police Station in Blantyre. We arrested him on Monday Morning and charged him with two counts: tampering with a graveyard and malicious damage,” said an inside source who refused to be named for fear of reprisals.
However, the source indicates that Walesi is now feigning insanity and the police are arranging to take him to Zomba Mental Hospital where doctors will examine him before commencement of prosecution.
The Casablanca Manor was a heavily guarded place in the prime of late Mutharika’s reign and in 2011, journalist, Ernest Mahwayo was arrested for taking pictures of the mansion.
