The Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) has announced that it will continue administering the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations on Thursday despite the day being a public holiday.
According to its time table circulated in January this year, Maneb indicated that candidates will break on Tuesday, July 5 and Wednesday July 6.
Maneb’s Public Relations Officer, Simeon Maganga, said all candidates and examination administrators must observe the timetable.
“When we were coming up with this time table we had this in mind that we were going to have two holidays, first one of Independence Day and Eid UL-fitri. Stakeholders involved in these holidays assured us that Tuesday could be Eid holiday and Wednesday independence celebrations hence we did not have any subjects on Tuesday and Wednesday but as you know Eid is unpredictable it has fallen on Thursday meaning examination will continue through Thursday,” explained Maganga.
In the same event, Maneb has registered two cases of cheating in Balaka district.
“Last week we arrested Joseph Makiyi and Charles Kumwenda for impersonation. What happened is that Makiyi was supposed to sit for the exams but instead he hired Kumwenda to write for him. Both pleaded guilty and after appearing in court. Makiyi was sentenced to six years in prison or in default which he paid whilst Kumwenda was fined K70 000 or in default to serve four years imprisonment.
“In the same area we also arrested a teacher from Tidziwe Full Primary School who was writing examination and he scribbled answers on a handkerchief. Him too is expected to appear before court,” explained Maganga.
