Rainbow Netball League’s slot up for grabs

Southern Region Netball League has disclosed that the Rainbow Paints League will accommodate one more team before July 31 registration deadline.

The league threw-off on Saturday with six out of nine registered teams taking part in opening games.

The league’s General Secretary, Annie Hanjahanja, said they would like to register 10 teams.

“All stakeholders agreed that we should have 10 teams to balance up the league. So far we have nine teams of which six were in action during the opening weekend,” she said.

White Eagles and Chitakale Sisters have since expressed interest in joining the league.

“The slot is open to any team that will register quickly. Any team that acts fast will be registered,” she said.

During opening games, Kukoma Diamonds defeated Shizaella 85-9 at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday as they bid to reclaim the title.

In other matches, Prison Sisters beat Chilomoni Sisters 65-25 while Gerald Tasaukadala humbled Young Professionals 48- 17.

Prison Sisters coach Joseph Banda is hopeful the team will make huge strides this season.

“We have a good squad and we prepared well during the off season break,” he said.

Rainbow Paints took over the league’s sponsorship last year to the tune of K4 million, replacing OG Issa Group of Companies, which withdrew its sponsorship. Previously, Rainbow Paints used to bankroll the Top VI Netball Series.
