Relegation battle looms for Red Lions

Once a force to be reckoned with, Red Lions are in serious danger of battling in an unfamiliar territory—the relegation zone, following their poor form in the 2016 TNM Super League season.

The Zomba soldiers have only managed three wins and one draw in 11 matches.

Lions succumbed to their seventh defeat of the season when they went down 3-1 to Be Forward Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium last Saturday.

The defeat saw them remain top of the relegation places after getting only 10 points from a possible 33.

Lions have showed a lack of confidence in their performance and most of their key players have performed below par this season.

Last season’s joint top scorer, Innocent Bokosi, is struggling for form and other potential match winners; Kumbukani Mwambene, Loti Chawinga and Boniface Kaulesi have been in the shadows.

But Lions’ assistant coach Prichard Mwansa said despite the continued dip-in-form, his side would do its utmost to avoid relegation.

He drew confidence from the previous two matches where they held Kamuzu Barracks and defeated Max Bullets 2-1.

“We have a good squad which has potential to challenge for the title. There are a few areas we need to work on. We are struggling a lot in attack, therefore, we will work on that to ensure that we start getting the desired results,” he said.

Mwansa said they were targeting maximum points in their remaining four first round ties to move away from the danger zone.
