Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Malison Ndau, has said his ministry is waiting for the Secretary to Treasury to write them permitting the commencement of work for the construction of Njakwa- Livingstonia road in Rumphi district.
Ndau told The Daily Times in an interview on Sunday that once the Secretary to Treasury authorises his ministry formally, the work will start immediately.
However, Ndau’s sentiments contradict President Peter Mutharika’s remarks on the matter who said the work has started.
Mutharika repeatedly told the people during the meetings he conducted in the region recently that he has fulfilled his promise following the commencement of the construction of the road from Rumphi Boma via Njakwa up to old Livingstonia synod headquarters.
However, Livingstonia Synod of Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) demanded an apology from Mutharika arguing that he misled people from the Northern Region that the actual construction works have commenced.
The synod’s General Secretary, Reverend Levi Nyondo, said it is sad that the president made the remarks on the podium that the work has commenced, while on the ground nothing has happened.
“We shall never stop talking, unless the road is done. We hear he [Mutharika] was saying on the podium in different meetings here in the Northern Region that the works have started and now the synod will be ashamed. We say no. We are Malawians and we pay tax. Let him construct the road. We are tired with podium promises while on the ground there is nothing tangible,” said Nyondo.
Mutharika’s Press Officer Mgeme Kalilani said there is no reason for the president to apologise because he is implementing his promise on the road. Kalilani said the president only knows that the work already started because the contractor is on the ground.
