Alliance Capital Limited has pledged support to junior golf in the country, starting with a K1 million sponsorship for an Inter-schools’ Junior Golf Tournament to take place at Country Club Limbe tomorrow.
Speaking during the sponsorship announcement yesterday in Blantyre, the company’s Marketing Executive, Rehenna Rice, said the company wants to invest in junior golf to produce international players in the future.
“Parents invest in Alliance Capital, therefore, we also have to invest in the kids. We believe that grooming kids at a tender age is essential because we can produce good players in the future that can represent the country on the international level,” she said.
Rice added that the company was also looking at the possibility of sponsoring more junior golf tournaments in the Central and Northern regions.
Junior Golf coach Dingaan Chirwa said the sponsorship was timely as the National Junior Golf Committee continues to develop junior golfers in the country.
“Since we started this initiative in 2009, we have been facing several challenges. This sponsorship will help us to reach out to more kids because we struggle to have good attendance when we have clinics for individuals. The kids will have a platform to display the skills they have been learning and that will help us identify more talent,” he said.
The competition will attract a record 60 junior golfers from Saint Andrews, Hill View, Royal Heritage, Phoenix and a team of developmental players from public schools.
A similar tournament is expected to be held in Lilongwe this December.
