Uncertainty on U-21 netball preparations

While Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) is yet to hire Under-21 national netball team coach ahead of the Africa Youth Netball Championship, rivals South Africa have stepped up their preparations.

The Baby Proteas have twice defeated Wales in preparation for the youth championship to run from June 23 to 30 in Botswana next month.

For the Malawi team, out-of-contract Malawi National Netball Team assistant coach Mary Waya and Civonets’ assistant coach, Whyte Mulilima have been heavily linked with the junior netball team’s post to fill the void left by late Connis Mhone.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said they were formalising the hiring of the new coach.

“We need to follow procedures. The team will only go into camp once we hire a new coach,” she said.

The Botswana tournament is important as it will also act as a World Youth Netball Championship qualifier.

In view of this, former Malawi Queens’ skipper, Judith Chalusa, has said it was unfortunate that the team was yet to go into camp.

“We are only hearing from the grapevine that the coaches were selected. We were supposed to be in camp to start preparations. At the moment, we don’t have a team. This means that we will start from scratch. I have seen that our colleagues South Africa are busy preparing by playing against Wales,” she said.
