Twenty-yeaer-old Sunny Yadav is this year’s champion of United General Insurance (UGI) Golf Tournament after beating 18 participants in the men’s category at Mzuzu Golf Club on Saturday.

Yadav, from the host club, grossed 80 and a net of 69, while the runner-up Mike Kalulu from Lilongwe Golf Club had a gross of 89 and a net of 70. Third-placed Daniel Mazoe of Kasasa Golf Club grossed 81 and a net of 71.

“Hard work and commitment have made me the champion. I like the sport since way back when I played in Malawi National Under-18 team before I went to school in India where I further developed my skills,” Yadav explained during an interview.

Yadav went away with an electronic heater and a trophy, while Kalulu got a coffee-maker and a trophy.

Mazoe received a deep fryer and a trophy plus a sandwich maker accompanied by another trophy for clinching the nearest to-the-pin award.

Managing Director for UGI, Bywell Chiwoni, commended the players for their participation, saying this was part of the partnership between their company and Mzuzu Golf Club.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we wanted to pay back to our customers who buy our policies. We also wanted to take part in the revival of this golf course after it was closed. This is the first tournament since it was re-opened,” Chiwoni said.

Mzuzu Golf Club captain, Bill Mvalo, hailed UGI, saying the tournament had enabled golfers to play after seven months of inactivity.

Kaluska Phiri got the longest drive award and also went home with a sandwich maker and a trophy.
