More blackouts ahead

by

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) says Malawians should expect more blackouts in the days ahead as the utility grapples with a fresh challenge of low water levels in Lake Malawi.

Escom says water levels in the Lake started dropping in March resulting in reduced generation capacity and that it will effect load shedding until the water situation improves.

In a statement released on Monday, Escom said power generation is being restricted due to the low water levels in Lake Malawi and the resultant regulated water flows in Shire River where Escom taps its water for hydro power generation.

And Escom does not indicate when the country hould expect normal electricity supply to be restored, simply indicating that “it is doing everything in its capacity to ensure that the available energy is fairly distributed cognizant of essential services.”

But Escom says all its hydro power units are available for generation in all its power stations indicating that strict operational measures have been instituted to ensure that there are adequate volumes of water required to run the machines to full capacity.
