Encroachment stifles hospital expansion

Authorities at Ekwendeni Mission Hospital of the Livingstonia Synod of the CCAP have called on traditional leaders to urge their communities against encroaching Ekwendeni Mission Hospital land.

Speaking in an interview, Ekwendeni Mission Hospital Principal Administrator, Reverend Clifford Baloyi, said the practice is affecting the hospital’s expansion drive.

“The development is making it difficult for us as a hospital to construct new buildings, including staff houses,” he said.

Baloyi urged chiefs to use their influence and convince their subjects to relocate.

Sub-Traditional Authority Yohane Jere said it is an offence for community members to encroach the hospital land.

“If there are land wrangles between the Synod and the community, then the church should come to me, so that we iron out the differences,” he said.

Moderator for the Synod Reverend Douglas Chipofya also acknowledged the problem.

He said they have been conducting awareness meetings with traditional leaders on the matter.
