Top coaches Outclassed

Malawi continues to excel in Confederation of African Football (Caf) coaching courses with all 73 coaches, who attended this year’s C licence course, making the grade.

Interestingly, TNM Super League coaches were not the most outstanding during the course held in Dedza from March 27 to April 10 in Dedza.

Instead, soccer analyst Enos Chatama topped the course followed by Kasungu District primary school teacher, McWilliams Nkunika and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Vice-President, James Mwenda

Fam Youth Development Officer, James Sangala, also made it on position four during the course, whose instructors included Caf Senior Instructor, John Kaputa.

Other prominent names that were part of the course included Mabvuto Lungu (Nyasa Big Bullets assistant coach), Elia Kananji (Wanderers deputy coach), Peter Mgangira, Clement Kafwafwa (Flames team manager), Peter Mponda (Wizards coach), Swadick Sanudi (Bullets goalkeeper trainer) and Red Lions assistant coach Pritchard Mwanza.

Chatama said he was humbled to have come out as the best.

“Mr. Kaputa and the other instructors should get the credit for our passing. The results would have been different if the instructors were not good enough. I thank them for the great work,” Chatama noted.

On his next plans after acquiring the Caf qualification, Chatama said he was not desperate to go into full-time coaching.

“I have many roles to play in the game. Besides being an analyst, I can also scout for players for teams. So, I am available for any team that needs my services,” he insisted.

Kaputa said this is not the first time for Malawi to achieve a 100 percent pass rate.

“We have also managed to get such results in Caf A and B. No one has ever failed Caf licence exams here in Malawi. This is a great achievement because coaches in other countries find it difficult to perform like we do here in Malawi,” Kaputa noted.

He said the certificates have since arrived and will be given out to the coaches in due course.

The news will surely be met with a sigh of relief in Bullets and Wanderers camps that were forced to demote Lungu and Kananji because they do not have Caf B licences required for all Super League head coaches under the Club Licensing System requirements.

The two still have a step to go before they obtain the minimum qualification to become head coaches in the top-flight league.
