A formal market for sweet potatoes has opened following the introduction of Beta Crisps by Universal Industries Limited, made from locally produced sweet potatoes.
Although there is huge potential for sweet potatoes to be grown on a large scale in Malawi, most farmers are disillusioned from growing the crop due to limited market opportunities.
Group Food Technologist at Universal industries, Jean Pankuku, said Universal is ready to offer a steady market for the crop throughout the year as the company plans to produce the crisps all year round.
“We have set a standard on quality and all we require is that farmers should properly grade their potatoes and we are ready to offer good prices,” she said.
Beta Crisps are made from the puree of orange fleshed sweet potaoes.
