Delegates from 24 countries have expressed interest to take part in the forthcoming World Boxing Council (WBC) convention, which Malawi will host next month.
Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board spokesperson, Frank Chibisa, said delegates drawn from as far as Asia and Europe have also made inquiries ahead of the convention to run from May 11 to 14 in Lilongwe.
“We are very pleased with the rate at which officials from foreign countries are inquiring to be part of the convention. This is historic because it is the first ever time that WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman will step in Africa for an official visit. It, therefore, comes as a no surprise that we are receiving an overwhelming response,” he said.
He added MPBCB was yet to compile the number of foreign delegates to attend the convention.
Chibisa said the convention would equip ringside officials with skill and knowledge to ably handle various roles.
“Remember the convention will run alongside clinics for ringside officials such as judges, referees, timekeepers and doctors. They will be equipped to handle international bouts all over the world,” he said.
During the convention, ringside officials are expected to pay U$50 (about K35,000) per course.
Recently, MPBCB President, Lonzoe Zimba, said they had negotiated that local officials, being the delegates from the host nation, should pay K20,000 instead of about K35,000.
