Traditional Authorities (T/As) from Mulanje and Thyolo have summoned leader of people fighting for land rights in the districts, Vincent Wandale, over what they consider to be breach of discipline within their territories.
The chiefs took the decision Thursday at their meeting attended by 11 T/As at Senior Chief Ngolongoliwa’s Mtundawosema headquarters in Thyolo district.
Wandale, who is the founder of Peoples Land Organisation (PLO), gave President Peter Mutharika a 90-day ultimatum to address their grievances or else the two districts would become a single sovereign state.
But T/A Ngolongoliwa who chaired the meeting said Wandale is breaching peace in the country particularly in those districts, therefore, they have asked the police to bring him to them so that he can explain his motive behind the idea, since he has never approached them.
“We have been hearing more about this man and his ambition to divide the country, which we vehemently say no to. If he were a cultured man he would have approached us and hear our side. But at the same time he is not supposed to challenge President Peter Mutharika on such trivia.
“This man should be arrested because he has swindled people’s money under pretence that he will give them land. We know very well that land in these districts is a problem but that cannot warrant anybody to challenge the government,” Ngolongoliwa said.
Wandale has since challenged the chiefs because according to him many people are landless as a result, they are perennially food insecure.
“I am prepared to meet them because I consulted them and some of them remember that I met them. But I know some of them are defending their titles. They are afraid to be dismissed. I must repeat here [that] I am ready to meet them any day,” Wandale said.
