Renowned fashion designer Cathy Kamthunzi Kochelani better known as Cathy Dixon in the fashion circles will Saturday host a fashion event known as Dress For Success at Serendib Conference Centre formerly Namiwawa Lodge in Blantyre.
The designer, who last year received an award at the Vukani Fashion Week in South Africa, said the event was for a cause.
“It is a fashion event in which we are fundraising for our Fashion for Change Women Empowerment,” said Cathy.
She will showcase some of her designs during the event which will also have fashion talk and makeover on the menu.
Cathy said fashion for change is a platform where women and young girls are empowered, motivated and equipped in different areas and that fashion was one of them.
“We empower women to start businesses even without capital. We have different women who have benefited in our programmes. We have women, who lost hope and didn’t have anything to do but we have empowered them and many are able to provide for their families,” said the designer.
She further said that through fashion for change they build confidence in women to be independent, to stand out and believe in themselves.
“We also do empower girls through this programme to work hard in their studies and we normally do this by providing free uniforms,” said Cathy.
She said they have organised the fashion event after observing that they have more students, who need uniforms adding that they have identified more schools in the rural areas in Blantyre.
“So this event is part of raising this money to embark on different projects and at the same time this programme also helps physically challenged people, who have what it takes to do something,” said Cathy.
The founder for Fashion for Change said their main aim is to use fashion to change lives of women.
“This programme is also part of creating jobs for women, we do not want them to stay idle but to do something to help their families and this is also part of reducing poverty in the country,” she said.
According to her, the event will also have up and coming designers such as Dzozo Wear from Mzuzu and Chikumbutso and Allanino Creations.
