Malawi government burns ivory

Court officials, police and officials from the department of wild parks are today burning a stock pile of at least 781 pieces of ivory worth 4 billion Malawi kwacha.

The development follows a court ruling for the ivory to be torched Monday at 9 O’clock in the morning.

According to our reporter Sam Kalimira who witnessed the torching of the ivory in Mzuzu, wildlife international bodies, the army and parks officials are guarding the place to ensure that all the pieces are burnt to ashes.

It is expected that the fire will take at least three days before putting it off.
