Bilal Trust aids Lower Shire communities

There were smiles in Chikwawa and Nsanje when Islamic charity, Bilal Trust Relief, distributed 4,000 bags of maize flour to starving communities in the two districts.

The distribution came barely a few days after Bilal Trust distributed 9,000 bags of maize flour in Mangochi and Machinga.

One of the beneficiaries, Esther Wiliki from Diliza Village in Nchalo area, thanked Bilal Trust Relief for the gesture.

She urged Capital Hill to reach out to them with food aid.

Wiliki said most communities in the area could not even afford the maize sold at Admarc depots.

“This donation will take us for two or three days, but what about the other days if no-one comes to our rescue. With my age, I don’t even have strength to farm, and that coupled by hunger, it is a big problem,” complained Wiliki.

Village head Mada of Traditional Authority Lundu described the donation as timely, saying communities in his area are struggling.

Speaking during the exercise, an official from Bilal Trust Relief, Ishmael Nathan, said the organisation was touched to hear of the suffering that communities in the two districts were facing following the hunger.

“Getting on the ground personally has opened my eyes as to how critical the food situation in Malawi is. We need more organisations to come in and assist.

“We are trying our best but we may not manage to save every Malawian caught up in this food crisis,” said Nathan.

He said the organisation was giving out the food aid according to the need and not because of political affiliation or religion.
