Malawi national golf team regroups today at Lilongwe Golf Club to tune up for the 22nd edition of Africa Zone VI Golf Championship, which Swaziland will host from April 11, 2016.
Team manager, Charles Merrick, confirmed tuesday that coach, Chris Kachiguma, has assembled 18 players, with half being developmental golfers.
With Zone VI organisers changing the format by splitting the championship into two divisions, Golf Union of Malawi and its coaches have responded by calling up the nine youthful players.
“We are encouraging junior golfing. The golf union has embarked on a programme to try and give exposure to up-and-coming players,” Merrick said.
“Teams are at liberty to field two strong teams at the Zone VI championship, but we will field the junior golfers in the B division.”
The team’s notable inclusions are Adam Sailesi, Paul Chidale, Gift Landisi, Kondwani Mphula, Dan Phiri, Symon Moses, Witman Brown, Bob Dambo, Richard Mdeza, Chris Mzokomera and George Sambo.
Conspicuously missing from the squad are highly-respected golfers, Victor Kachepatsonga, Adack Sailesi and Henry Mtuta.
Kachiguma, yesterday said the squad will be trimmed to eight after assessing the players during the play-offs in Lilongwe.
“We have selected the best golfers in the country, and we believe the team will do well this year. The final squad will be released in April,” said Kachiguma, who did not travel to Uganda last year after he was dropped on the 11th hour.
Last year, Malawi finished on a miserable position eight out of nine teams that travelled to Uganda.
