United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Malawi, Mia Seppo, says UNDP is committed to finishing the job it started 50 years ago, motivated by the Sustainable Development Goals and Malawi’s national priorities.
According to a press statement released by UNDP during the week, the organisation has contributed to the development of capacity for building resilience, especially among the less-privileged and in marginalised areas, as well as promoting human rights and inclusive democratic governance, including support to electoral processes and strengthening democratic accountability institutions, among other things.
“UNDP looks forward to deepening its partnerships with the Government of Malawi, development partners, the civil society, the private sector, the media and the people of Malawi to empower lives and create resilient communities in next five decades,” Seppo said.
She further said the development challenges lying ahead require an integrated multi-sectoral approach to overcome them.
Meanwhile, the UNDP administrator, Helen Clark, said over the years UNDP has supported the strengthening of policy and institutional frameworks for gender equality and women empowerment, climate change, disaster risk, environment and natural resources management, HIV prevention, public sector management, social cohesion, economic competitiveness and private sector development.
“We working together using the newly created SDGs as our guide, a world where economies and societies [that] are more inclusive can be built, and the planet can be protected from the worst effects of climate change and other forms of environmental degradation, ” Clark said.
UNDP is today commemorating 50 years of existence in Malawi under the theme, ‘A time to build on gains and shape the future’.
