After admitting failure in the year 2015 where they only managed to release one production titled Aneneri, popular drama group Kwathu gets back to serious business launching their latest production titled Mwatilakwira this year.
The group will premiere the production at Mulanje View Motel on Sunday before dating Blantyre Cultural Centre on March 3, 2016.
“Mwatilakwira is a play that focuses on different agreements that the government signs before consulting Malawians be it financial, human rights, bilateral loans etc which in the end bring miseries to Malawians,” said the group’s spokesperson Bon Kalindo, who is also a Member of Parliament.
Kalindo better known as Winiko added that those responsible for signing should bear in mind that they sign such agreements on behalf of the Malawi government representing all Malawians without looking at political affiliations or the ruling party.
“There are a lot of issues we are tackling in the play and we hope people will enjoy it,” said Winiko.
The versatile actor and comedian is back in Kwathu after he moved out following some issues and he said this is the group which has made him to be where he is today.
“This new play also looks at the role human rights activists play on issues affecting Malawians. These human rights organisations need to provide on-going civic education to Malawians on different issues like democracy, prisoners, sex workers, persons with disability, religious faiths and all minority groups without concentrating on one group,” said Winiko.
With several drama groups feeling the pitch of the economic problems and failing to stage productions, Kwathu Drama Group continues to stand out especially in drama in Chichewa.
Recently the group’s director Eric Mabedi and another veteran actor Charles Mphoka apologised to Malawians for failing them in the year 2015.
“We did not do well in 2015 frankly speaking and we disappointed many of our fans. We only had one play Aneneri which was written by myself and Billy Kaunda. But we promise the best in the year 2016,” said Mphoka.
Winiko said Mwatilakwira was written by Mabedi and that it features all the renowned Kwathu Drama Group actors.
“We have had massive preparations and this being the first production this years we want people to sample the best,” he said.
Winiko said this year people should brace for more productions revealing that they will be releasing their second production this year in May titled Chaulere.
Kwathu Drama Group was formed in the 1980s and has so far produced several plays which have impressed Malawians.
Despite scoring points maintaining their stage presence, they have failed to move with the times to put some of their plays on DVDs.
