Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) has welcomed the new board which has been appointed by President Peter Mutharika.

Cosoma’s Senior Licensing Officer Rosario Kamanga said the appointment of the new board will help in propelling the copyright body but also move some of the programmes.

“We are happy that the new board has been appointed. We welcome the new board and we are looking forward to work with them. Now we are assured that some of the programmes which were not running due to the absence of the board will now take shape,” said Kamanga.

He then hailed the government for making the appointment without delays.

The previous board which was headed by Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango came into effect after a long time.

“This time around the government has done well making the appointments without delays and we should commend them,” said Kamanga.

According to a letter dated January 22, 2016 and signed by Chief Secretary to the government, President Peter Mutharika has appointed Charles Sinetre as chairperson of the copyright body.

The president has also confirmed former member of Parliament and musician Joseph Tembo, Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, Rudo Mkukupha Chakwera, Ezaius Mkandawire and Alfred Msadala as members of the Cosoma board of directors with effect from January 16, 2016 for a period of two years.

Mhango is the only member, who is back in the board from the previous board.

Tembo, Mkukupha Chakwera and Mhango were shortlisted during Cosoma’s Annual General Meeting in September last year pending approval.

The three are musicians while Mkandawire and Msadala are Film Association of Malawi (Fama) and Book Publishers Association of Malawi (Bpam) presidents respectively.

Kamanga said the president has the powers to appoint any member provided he fulfils all the requirements as a member of Cosoma hence appointing Sinetre.
