East or West, far and wide they say home is best! After spending 17 years in the US without returning to Malawi, Tiwonge Mhango returns home Thursday.
He has since produced a single titled ‘Mbuye Mbuye,’ with rapper Young Kay to reunite with his roots.
“I am so excited to step back in Malawi. It has been long yes but finally, God has made it possible for me to be back home after spending almost two decades in a foreign land,” said the Atlanta based musician cum businessman of the ‘Turn It Up’ and ‘Shine’ fame.
Mhango said he decided to rope in Young Kay to celebrate his home coming and enable him reconnect with the local music industry.
“Young Kay is one talented guy I have always respected. I must admit that it has been exciting to do a collabo with this dude. I am sure there will be many more projects we shall work together on and engage other local artists too,” he said.
Tiwonge observed that urban music in Malawi has grown tremendously and that the internet has escalated its spread beyond the borders.
“There is a great deal of talent in Malawi in as far as music is concerned. It is just a matter of time before the world wakes up to appreciate this reality,” said the musician.
Young Kay famed for the hit ‘Anankabango,’ said he does not take it for granted to be recognised by an experienced musician of Tiwonge’s calibre.
“To me, it is a great honour to work on a collabo with Tiwonge. These are some of the guys that pioneered the movement of urban music in Malawi way back in the late 90s,” said the youthful rapper.
He described this as a defining moment and that he was looking forward to more projects as “we exchange knowledge and expertise to uplift our talents.”
The track is set to be available for premiering and downloads on Friday.
The instrumentation of the song comprises a fusion of the African beat, R&B and some elements of soft pop.
In the song, Tiwonge is thanking God for his endless love, mercy and success.
Before leaving for the US in the late 90s, Tiwonge and his brother Gift Mhango set the urban music charts of fire with their ‘Turn It Up’ song.
Whilst in the country, Tiwonge plans to shoot a video with Young Kay before he goes back to the US where it is reported that he is a successful businessman in logistics and transportation.
Tiwonge has an album to his credit titled Shine which he released in 2009 and comprises hits such as ‘Kulibe,’ ‘Pamtetete,’ and ‘Send Your Fire.’
The musician started his musical journey at a tender age as he was a member of the now defunct Mhango Salvation singers, with his brother Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango leading the family group.
