Be Forward Wanderers top officials including chairman George Chamangwana and general secretary Mike Butao have disclosed they will seek another term of office.
This follows an announcement by the trustees’ board chairperson Rashid Gaffar that Wanderers main executive committee will go to polls on February 6 with the supporters committee holding its elections a week earlier.
Chamangwana said there was no time they had attempted to block elections.
“We were simply following what the constitution says. Our elections are held every two years and now it is the time to have them. There is no short cut. Few misguided individuals deliberately incited trouble to dubiously force their way into the committee,” he said.
Butao said it was obvious that most members in the outgoing committee will seek re-election following what he termed ‘tremendous contribution to the team’.
“Indeed most of us will seek re-election because we have achieved tremendous things. When we came to power we realised that transportation was a major stumbling block. We used part of the donation from the former head of state Joyce Banda to buy a coaster to ease our transport woes,” he said.
Butao said the committee also managed to source sponsorship from Japanese firm, Be Forward Limited.
“We were the best sponsored team in the league and currently I can confirm that sponsorship has been extended,” he said.
On pitch, Butao said Wanderers also impressed having won the Carlsberg Cup and finished second in the Standard Bank Knockout.
“Overall I would say our performance was quite good on the pitch where we won the Carlsberg Cup after beating our rivals Big Bullets 2-1. We also finished in the paid ranks in the TNM Super League [fourth position],” he said
The outgoing committee has received overwhelming support from Gaffar, who told The Sunday Times, that the committee had done enough to merit re-election.
