Police in Blantyre have arrested at least two Blantyre-based young men on suspicion that they were found in possession of weapons that were used to murder three people while carrying out a spate of armed robberies.

Southern Region spokesperson, James Kadadzera, confirmed the arrests, but refused to give identities of the suspects.

“We shall reveal and expose names of the suspects at a press conference at the Southern Region Police Headquarters tomorrow [Monday] morning. This will include the recovered items,” Kadadzera said.

However, reports indicate that the police have recovered a pistol and 212 live ammunitions while arresting the suspects. One of the suspects has been identified as a son to a top politician while the other one is a son to a well-known Blantyre-based famous medical doctor.

The weapons were reportedly used in stealing four motor vehicles and in the process committing three murders.

The stolen motor vehicles include a Mazda Bongo whose owner was murdered, a Toyota Hilux double cabin belonging to MTL whose driver, an ex-police officer, was also killed.

The weapons were also reportedly used to kill a Blantyre-based businessperson, of Indian descent, whose body was dumped in Kanjedza Township, in the City. The weapons are also suspected to have been used to steal a government Toyota Prado, belonging to a Cabinet minister.
