Local middleweight champion, Felix Mwamaso, retained the belt after beating former champion, Alick Mwenda, on a split points’ decision at Lilongwe Community Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Two judges gave the title fight to Mwamaso when they each scored 117-111 while the third judge gave it to Mwenda 111-113.
According to reports, Mwenda dominated the first two rounds, but Mwamaso dominated most of the remaining rounds.
Mwenda, a Malawi Defence Force soldier, said he painfully accepted defeat because nothing can change the decision.
“Those that watched the fight know who won. I just have to accept that I lost,” said the 28-year-old boxer, whose record has dropped to seven defeats and 15 wins in 22 fights.
Mwamaso, 23, said he was not prepared to let go the belt.
“I was well-prepared. I let him enjoy the first two rounds, then I took control of the fight. I am the champion and I promise to beat him each time he wants a rematch,” he said.
Mwamaso has improved his record to 14 wins and three defeats in 17 fights.
In the main supporting fight, Malani Kayuni was outclassed by little-known Raston Kayira of Mzuzu in a non-title lightweight fight. People chanted the name of Kayira as he displayed rare skills.
In another fight, Kudakwache Banda knocked-out Henry Muyaya in the fourth round. Reports indicate that Muyaya was rescued by his corner-man after he took a lot of punishment.
In other non-title fights, Lameck Mkangama of Kamuzu Barracks knocked out Jones Mbenje of Liwonde in round four while Yobe Kamnyonya once again defeated Yohane Banda on points.
